Get Moving! Pom Spoon Relay + Eye Spy with Letters/Numbers

In this activity, we’re combining a little bit of physical activity with a fun "Eye Spy" worksheet designed to help your child recognize letters and numbers in a hands-on way. All you’ll need is a spoon, some colorful poms (or cotton balls or any small object that will fit on a spoon), and my free downloadable worksheet focused on letter and number recognition.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Start with Movement: Hand your preschooler a spoon and place a pom on it. Tell them their job is to carry the pom on the spoon across the room very carefully to where the worksheet is waiting. You can even set up a little obstacle course for them to make it more challenging!

  2. Focus on Learning: The real fun begins once they reach the worksheet, which you can easily download. The worksheet is a simple “Eye Spy” game where they’ll need to find and cover (or drop their pom on) the letter or number indicated on the sheet. The sheet will have a mix of letters, and the goal is for them to recognize and place the pom only on the letter or number indicated.

  3. Switch It Up: Using this activity to reinforce letter recognition over time, you can switch out the letter as their skills increase. You can even time them to add some fun competition if they’re up for it!

Why This Activity Is Great

  • Gets Kids Moving: We all know little ones love to move! This activity lets them burn off energy while also practicing focus and balance.

  • Letter Recognition: By searching for the letter, your child will work on identifying letters and numbers in a playful way.

  • Hands-On Fun: Using poms adds a sensory element that makes it more engaging and interactive.

  • Customizable: Want to leave out the pom relay and just focus on the worksheet? No problem! Need a different letter? We’ve got you covered with various worksheets for different letters.
